The margarita, now one of the most popular cocktails in the world, is thought to have started out as the variation on another prohibition-era drink called the "Daisy". Spanish for "daisy", the marg swapped in tequila for the requisite brandy and lime juice for lemon juice, and a classic was born. Decades have passed, and hundreds of versions of the margarita have been created (oh hey Creamsicle Margarita), but we in the Delish Test Kitchen still love the original.
By contrast to many of the diluted, super-sweet, and sometimes fizzy huge mugs of margaritas that are often served in restaurants around the world nowadays, a traditional margarita is actually a strong, tart cocktail made with three simple ingredients — good-quality tequila, orange liqueur, and freshly-squeezed lime juice. This simple margarita mix is incredibly quick and easy to make, either for a single serving or a larger batch for a crowd. And it is downright delicious served on the rocks, with or without a salted rim.
Ingredients
ice
50ml tequila reposado
25ml lime juice
20ml triple sec (we used Cointreau)
For the garnish
salt
2 lime wedges
Method
Sprinkle a few teaspoons of salt over the surface of a small plate or saucer. Rub one wedge of lime along the rim of a tumbler and then dip it into the salt so that the entire rim is covered.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add the tequila, lime juice and triple sec. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
Strain the mix into the prepared glass over fresh ice. Serve with a wedge of lime.
Enjoy!
